Happy International Men’s Day!

Let’s toast to aging with good health, thoughtful love and lots of laughter as we celebrate International Men’s Day. When it comes to aging well, here’s how you can best support, encourage, and cheer on the special men in your life:

Mental

Encourage men with words of affirmation. Words of affirmation are any spoken or written words that confirm, support, uplift and empathize with another person in a positive manner. Consider actions of love, go out of your way to make life a little easier for the one you love. At times it is the small acts of kindness that allow for the feeling of love to flourish.

Emotional

Laugh out loud with men to keep things light. As men age, the ability to relax, sit back and mellow like a fine scotch increases. Find the joy in small adventures like weekend traveling, spending time outdoors, or trying something new- simply because time allows.

You know the saying, “Don’t take yourself too seriously”, really it means to enjoy the moments despite distraction.

Engage in the present moment, even when you're feeling overwhelmed. Being present and actively being mindful not only makes us happier, it reduces stress, and improves overall health.

Physical

Support men’s health through action. Inserting supportive wellness that boosts metabolism and improves endurance. As we age our metabolism slows and the rate at which we break down food decreases by 10% each decade. Clean eating is a must for increased energy, brain health and weight management. Be sure to set time aside for exercise, it doesn’t have to be an extensive routine. Keep it simple with practices like walking, cycling, swimming, strength training, and yoga. Be sure to be consistent with hydration, as a hydrated body is a happy body.

Lastly, there is warmth and comfort that comes from physical touch. Touch is essential and there really is no substitution for a great big hug. When people hug for 20 seconds or more, the feel good hormone oxytocin is released which creates a stronger connection between huggers.
